Inspiration & UDA
For our University of Miami sunsations idea, I came up with it after watching the attached video. I was on youtube one day and this video came up on my recommended page. The documentary I linked is about the University of Michigan's dance team and their time at UDA dance nationals in the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.
UDA, the sister company to UCA, stands for the Universal Dance Association and was founded in 1980 as a series of dance camps. Each year UDA holds an event at Disney World where D1 colleges from all across the United States come to compete. The teams can compete in different styles: poms, jazz, contemporary/lyrical, and hip hop. The University of Miami is apart of the ACC which stands for the Atlantic coastal conference, one of the power 5 collegic conferences. The ACC is one of the many conferences that annually participate in the UDA dance competitions. From what I have read in the rules it seems there should not be any issues with the team's eligibility if we continue with this idea since we plan to only discuss/show their practice and preparations rather than going to the event in Orlando and showing what happens there.
For a further understanding, I have attached the rules of UDA's collegic dance nationals.
After watching this documentary it sparked a couple ideas. I immediately thought about how I knew people on both the University of Florida and the University of Miami dance team. After realizing that I remembered how close I live to the University of Miami and how doable a documentary about their dance team would be to make.
The UMich documentary was just a resource of inspiration and we plan to make a project that is in no way similar. How we would differ from the University of Michigan dance team documentary is that our group would focus more on the preparation for nationals rather than the actual competition. We planned to go down to the campus and show all the hard work the team puts into practices, workouts, and conditioning. Another idea we had was to make a sort of day in the life of a Sunsation prepping for nationals. We would follow them around showing the classes they take and the special amenities they have access to and use because they are considered student-athletes.
This all sounds good in theory but we still do not have the green light.
